Twenty-five bamboo canes at 60cm, stained green so they disappear into the foliage. Sixty centimetres is the houseplant and short-crop length — enough to hold up a pepper, a young tomato or a leaning houseplant without towering over it.

Bamboo is the sensible material for this: stiff enough to support a fruiting stem, light enough to push in by hand, and compostable when it finally splits. Smart Garden stain them with a water-based dye rather than a solvent one.

How to Use

• Push the cane in beside the stem, a few centimetres clear of the roots.
• Tie the stem in loosely with twisty ties, twine or soft clips, leaving room to thicken.
• Add a second tie further up as the plant grows.
• Pull the canes at the end of the season, dry them and store them under cover for reuse.

Care & Caution

• Cane ends sit at eye height for a kneeling adult and a standing child. Cap them, or fit cane toppers, anywhere you work close in.
• Split bamboo splinters. Wear gloves when pulling canes at the end of the season, and discard any that have shattered.
