The PAW plate does two jobs from one moulding. One face is a slow feeder, ridged into channels a dog has to nose food out of; turn it over and the other face is a lick pad, which takes wet food, yoghurt or paté spread thin and turns a thirty-second meal into several minutes of licking. Licking is self-soothing behaviour, which is why lick pads get used for nail trims and thunderstorms as much as for feeding.

This is the Mini, in green — the small plate in the range, sized for cats, puppies and small dogs rather than for a Labrador’s dinner. How to Use

• Slow feeder side up: tip dry food in and let it settle into the channels.
• Lick pad side up: spread wet food, yoghurt or paté thinly across the surface and into the grooves.
• Freeze a loaded lick pad for half an hour or more to make it last considerably longer.
• Wash after every use — top rack of the dishwasher, or warm water and washing-up liquid.
• Stand it on a level floor, and on a mat if your dog pushes it around.
