Purple plaiting bands, supplied in a tub rather than a small packet, which is the practical way to buy them: a full mane takes a good handful of bands at a time and very few of them survive to be used twice.

Purple is the colour to reach for when you want to see what you are doing. Against a chestnut or bay mane a coloured band stands out while you work, which makes it easy to spot a plait that has slipped or a band you have missed at the end of the day. How to Use

• Damp the mane down and divide it into even sections.
• Plait each section and finish the end with two or three turns of a band.
• Fold or roll the plait to the crest and hold it there with a second band.
• Cut the bands out with a seam ripper at the end of the day rather than pulling them.
• Sweep up afterwards — bands end up in bedding, in the lorry and in the wash bay.
