Cob is the middle of the three sizes Hy make this noseband in, sitting between Pony and Full. It is a plain, flat leather cavesson — no padding, no raised edge, no drop — bought either as a replacement for a noseband that has worn out or, more often, to swap a raised noseband off a bridle for something quieter. Hy point it specifically at showing native breeds, where flat, unfussy leatherwork is what the ring expects.

Because it is a straight cavesson it fits any bridle with a removable noseband, so a working bridle can be dressed down for a showing class and put back afterwards. Hy publish sizes as Pony, Cob and Full and give no measurements in centimetres, so if your bridle is between sizes it is worth measuring the noseband you are replacing before ordering.

How to Use

• Slide the old noseband off the bridle headpiece and thread this one on in its place.
• Do the noseband up two fingers' width below the projecting cheekbone, not down on the soft part of the nose.
• Leave room for two fingers between the leather and the jaw — a cavesson is not a tightening device.
• Clean it with the rest of the bridle and oil it occasionally to keep the leather supple, as Hy advise.

Care & Caution

• Do not soak leather or dry it near a heater or radiator — it stiffens, cracks and then fails without warning.
• Check the stitching and the buckle tongue before every ride. This is ridden tack, and a noseband that lets go mid-school takes the flash or standing martingale attachment with it.
• New leather is stiff. Oil it lightly before its first outing rather than expecting it to sit flat straight from the packet.
