Nyger is the seed goldfinches come for. Tiny, black and oil-rich, it is too fine for most birds to bother with but ideal for the slender bills of goldfinches, siskins and other small finches. Henry Bell describe theirs as premium, highly nutritious and rich in oils, with a high protein content that helps the regeneration of feathers.

This 900g bag is the smaller of Henry Bell's two sizes, sensible for a single nyger feeder or for finding out whether goldfinches are around before buying more. Nyger must go in a dedicated nyger feeder: in a standard seed feeder it pours out of the ports and ends up on the ground.

Feeding

• Fill a dedicated nyger feeder; a funnel helps.
• Feed regularly once you start, as birds come to rely on a supply.
• Nyger clumps when wet. Tip out caked seed rather than topping up over it.
• Clean the feeder regularly with a bird hygiene spray.
• Provide fresh water for drinking and bathing.
