Carrs Leather Oil is the heavy-duty end of the Carr & Day & Martin leather range — the manufacturer's own description is a heavy-duty alternative to neatsfoot oil. It is a viscous oil, not a spray or a balsam, and it is formulated for leather that has gone genuinely dry, cracked and brittle rather than for routine upkeep.

It is fed into the flesh side of the leather and left to soak in for at least twenty-four hours, which tells you what kind of job it is: a restoration, done once, not a weekly habit. It carries waterproofing properties as well as softening ones, so it suits harness, working saddlery and leather walking boots that live outdoors. At 300ml, a bottle treats a fair amount of leather because it goes on thin.

How to Use

• Make sure the leather is clean and dry before you start.
• Apply a thin layer to the flesh side of the leather.
• Allow it to soak in for at least 24 hours.
• If required, apply a thin layer to the grain side as well.
• Re-apply only if the leather still appears dry, taking care not to over-oil.
• Test on a hidden area before use.

Care & Caution

• Not suitable for aniline or untreated leather, suede or nubuck. Test on a hidden area first — oil darkens leather permanently.
• Do not over-oil. Carr & Day & Martin say so plainly, and over-oiled leather goes soft and loses tensile strength — which is a real safety issue on stirrup leathers, billets and reins.
• Build it up in thin layers over days rather than soaking a piece in one go.
