Carnilove's kitten can uses the same two fish and meat ingredients as their adult version — turkey at 47% and salmon at 20% — with the salmon oil doubled to 0.2%, which is where the extra omega 3 for a growing kitten comes from. Protein comes out at 11.0% and fat at 6.6% against the adult can's 10.6% and 6.5%, and energy is a shade higher at 1,035 kcal/kg.

The differences are genuinely small, and it is fair to say Carnilove have built the kitten recipe on the adult one rather than starting again. What matters for a kitten is that it is a complete food with taurine at 800mg/kg and a full vitamin and trace element pack, and that a 100g can is about the right size for a kitten's day.

Feeding

• Carnilove's guide runs from about 155g a day for a 1kg kitten to about 300g a day for a 5kg cat, fed as the complete diet.
• That is roughly one and a half cans a day for a small kitten, split across three or four small meals.
• Halve the amount if a dry kitten food is being fed alongside.
• Serve at room temperature; a kitten will often refuse food straight from the fridge.
