Boost is Westland's peat-free container compost, and the 46 litre bag fills roughly nine five-litre pots or six twelve-inch hanging baskets — a useful figure when you are working out how many bags a display needs. It is blended specifically for containers rather than for beds, which is why moisture management dominates the formulation.

Two things do that work: water-storing granules that hold moisture in the mix, and a wetting agent that lets a dried-out pot take water again instead of shedding it down the sides. Westland also add West+2 wood fibre to slow down how fast a container dries. Peat-free materials are more porous than peat, so a Boost container still wants checking more often than an old peat pot did.

How to Use

• Rework the compost between your hands first; it compresses in the bag and needs its structure back.
• Knock plants out of their old pots and shake the loose compost off the root ball.
• Set each plant in the new container, fill the gaps with Boost and water in well.
• Test with a finger before watering rather than watering to a routine — peat-free mixes look drier on top than they are underneath.
• Reseal part-used bags and keep them dry and frost-free.
