TopChop Alfalfa is dried alfalfa, chopped and given a light dressing of cold-pressed linseed oil, with dried mint leaves stirred through it. There are three ingredients in the bag and nothing else — no molasses, no straw and no preservatives. The oil is there to hold the dust down and limit the leaf shatter that costs alfalfa its protein.

Alfalfa is the highest-protein forage a horse is likely to be offered, and TopSpec declare this at 16% protein against 25% fibre and 2% starch. That combination is what makes it a working horse's chaff rather than a pony's — it carries real nutritional weight, so it is not the chop to reach for if the animal in front of you needs to lose condition.
