The Alligator is built round a knobbly back and a row of open grooves, and those grooves are the working part. Whimzees describe hollow shapes and spaces that let the teeth grip, with channels that reach into the narrower gaps a brush tends to skate over. Cleaning here is mechanical: the dog does the work by chewing.

This is the Large, the biggest of the three sizes Whimzees make the Alligator in, sized for dogs of 18–27kg and carrying 176 kcal a chew. It is a firm chew rather than a soft treat, so a steady chewer will be occupied for a while rather than swallowing it in two bites.

• Whimzees describe the range as natural and grain-free, with the Ricebone shape explicitly excepted.

Care & Caution

• Whimzees state these are not suitable for dogs under nine months old, or for any dog under 2.3kg.
• Whimzees warn that swallowing any item without thoroughly chewing it may be harmful or even fatal — stay in the room and take the last short piece away.
• Feed one correctly sized chew a day only, and always leave fresh water down.
