Fibre-Lite Molasses Free is the lowest-calorie chopped fibre Spillers make, and the figures are the reason to buy it: starch 1.5%, sugar 1.25%, fibre 30%, and 8.0 MJ/kg. Leaving the molasses out is what keeps the sugar where it is; most palatable chaffs get there by coating straw in it.

The palatability problem is solved with grass nuts and 0.1% real garlic instead, which matters because a very low-calorie chaff a horse refuses is no use. Use it to bulk out a balancer so a good doer has something to chew on, or to slow down a horse that eats its bucket in ninety seconds.

Feeding

• It is a complementary feed, not a complete one. Feed it with a balancer or compound feed so the diet is balanced.
• Spillers' worked example for a 350kg pony in light work: 250g per meal alongside 350g of Daily Balancer.
• For a 500kg horse in light work: 500g per meal alongside 3kg of cubes daily.
• Introduce gradually and feed with ad-lib or measured forage as your diet plan requires.
• Clean fresh water at all times.
