Red Mills Horse Cooked Mix 14% – 25kg
Red Mills Horse Cooked Mix – 25kg
Horse Cooked Mix is RED MILLS' racing feed: a traditional, oat-based, high-energy muesli aimed at racehorses in full training, broodmares, stallions and growing youngstock. Steam-cooked oat, barley and maize flakes head the composition, cooked to shift more of the starch digestion into the small intestine.
At 14.0% protein and 12.5 MJ/kg it is built for horses doing fast work and for stock that has to grow. This is the opposite end of the RED MILLS range from the Horse Care cubes — nothing about it is designed to be calming, and the 25kg bag reflects how quickly a yard goes through it.
Performance & Benefits
- Oat-based, high-energy racing muesli at 12.5 MJ/kg with 14.0% crude protein.
- Steam-cooked oat, barley and maize flakes for improved small-intestinal starch digestion.
- Soya bean meal, extruded soya and steam-cooked soya bean flakes supply quality protein for growth and muscle repair.
- Calcium 1.23% and phosphorus 0.60%, a ratio that matters for youngstock and for horses in fast work.
- Fortified per kg with 15,000 iu vitamin A, 2,000 iu vitamin D3, 300 iu vitamin E, 60mg copper, 180mg zinc and 0.5mg selenium.
- RED MILLS are members of the BETA NOPS scheme and state that all their equine feeds are LCMS-tested for naturally occurring prohibited substances on a positive-release basis, with the NOPS logo carried on the packaging. They are clear that the scheme is not a guarantee.
Suitable For
- Racehorses in full training.
- Broodmares and stallions.
- Growing youngstock needing energy and protein together.
- Any horse needing a high-energy, cereal-based diet.
- Not for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or ulcer-prone horse, nor for a leisure horse in light work — this is a full racing ration. Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes at 4.0% starch, or Red Mills Cool 'N' Cooked Mix for lighter work, are the better fits.
Feeding
- Barren mares: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg mare.
- Stallions in light work: 0.4–0.9kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.5kg for a 500kg stallion.
- Lactating mares: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 5.0–7.0kg for a 500kg mare.
- Split large daily amounts across three or more meals — a racing ration should never go in as one bucket.
- Feed alongside good forage, with clean, fresh water always available.
- Racing and competition yards should keep the batch details from the bag in case of a post-race sample.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: oat flakes (steam cooked), barley flakes (steam cooked), maize flakes (steam cooked), soya bean meal, cane molasses, soya hulls, soya bean extruded, soya bean flakes (steam cooked), sunflower seed meal, barley, wheat, wheatfeed, mono-dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, magnesium oxide.
- Typical analysis: crude protein 14.0%, crude fibre 8.0%, crude oils and fats 4.5%, crude ash 7.0%. Digestible energy 12.5 MJ/kg.
- Minerals: calcium 1.23%, phosphorus 0.60%, sodium 0.25%, chloride 0.58%, potassium 0.81%, magnesium 0.28%.
- Per kg: vitamin A 15,000 iu, vitamin D3 2,000 iu, vitamin E 300 iu. Iron 120mg, iodine 1.5mg, copper 60mg, manganese 100mg, zinc 180mg, selenium 0.5mg.
- RED MILLS publish no starch figure for Horse Cooked Mix. With three cooked cereal flakes at the head of the composition it will be high, but we will not state a number they have not declared.
- Earlier copy on this page gave digestible energy as 12.3 MJ/kg, calcium as 1.0%, phosphorus as 0.5% and copper as 40mg. RED MILLS' declared figures are 12.5 MJ/kg, 1.23%, 0.60% and 60mg, and those are used above.
Care & Caution
- A high-energy cereal ration. Entirely unsuitable for horses prone to laminitis, insulin resistance, EMS or PSSM, and demanding on a horse prone to gastric ulceration.
- No starch figure is published. Keep individual meals small and forage constant to reduce the risk of hindgut acidosis and colic.
- Horses running under BHA or FEI rules are the ones this feed is aimed at. RED MILLS' BETA NOPS membership reduces contamination risk but does not remove it — keep bag batch records, and never feed from a bag shared with a yard using medicated feed.
- Youngstock rations should be worked out with a nutritionist. Over-feeding energy to growing horses carries a real developmental orthopaedic disease risk.
