Red Mills Horse Care 14 Mix – Low-Starch High-Fibre Performance Horse Feed, 20kg
Red Mills Horse Care 14 Mix – 20kg
Horse Care 14 Mix is the muesli version of the Horse Care 14 cube: steam-cooked soya bean flakes lead, followed by beet pulp and soya hulls, with oat flakes fourth and whole oats further down. RED MILLS build it around fibre and oil rather than around cereal, and the numbers show it — 12.0% fibre and 8.5% oil.
It carries the RED MILLS Nutrition Care package of maerl and prebiotic oligosaccharides, and at 12.8 MJ/kg it has more energy than the cube. Declared starch is 15%, lower than a traditional competition mix but not low enough for a metabolic horse.
Performance & Benefits
- 8.5% crude oils and fats, the highest oil level of the RED MILLS mixes we stock, at 12.8 MJ/kg.
- 12.0% crude fibre from beet pulp, soya hulls and chopped alfalfa.
- 14.0% crude protein, led by steam-cooked soya bean flakes and extruded soya.
- Declared starch of 15%, lower than a conventional cereal competition mix.
- RED MILLS Nutrition Care package: maerl 0.75% and mannan-/fructo-oligosaccharides 0.1%.
- Per kg: 2,500 iu vitamin D3, 375 iu vitamin E, 50mg vitamin C, 4.4mg vitamin K3 and 3.75mg biotin, with partly chelated trace elements.
Suitable For
- Performance horses and horses in training.
- Breeding stock wanting a lower-starch ration.
- Horses that are easily stressed or temperamental.
- Horses needing extra condition, and horses working in challenging climates.
- Not suitable for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or EMS horse at 15% declared starch. Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes at 4.0% starch is the alternative in this range.
Feeding
- Light work: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Moderate work: 0.4–0.8kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Hard work: 0.8–1.2kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 4.0–6.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Intense work: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 6.0–8.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Feed a minimum of 1.5% of bodyweight daily as forage, splitting the concentrate into two or more meals.
- Clean, fresh water at all times.
Composition & Analysis

- Typical analysis: crude protein 14.0%, crude fibre 12.0%, crude oils and fats 8.5%, crude ash 8.7%. Starch 15%. Digestible energy 12.8 MJ/kg.
- Minerals: calcium 1.35%, phosphorus 0.68%, sodium 0.29%, chloride 0.69%, potassium 0.99%, magnesium 0.30%.

Care & Caution
- At 15% declared starch this is a lower-starch mix, not a low-starch one. It is not appropriate for a horse with laminitis, insulin resistance, EMS or PSSM.
- High-oil rations need two to three weeks to bed in. Build up slowly rather than switching in a day.
- Feed to condition and adjust the rate as work changes.
