Red Mills Conditioning 14 Mix – High-Calorie Oat-Free Horse Feed, 20kg
Red Mills 14% Conditioning Mix – 20kg
RED MILLS publish this feed as 14% Conditioning Mix: an oat-free, high-calorie muesli whose job is putting weight and shine on a horse that is dropping off. At 14.1 MJ/kg it is the most energy-dense mix in the everyday RED MILLS range, and it gets there through oil as much as cereal, at 8.0% crude oils and fats.
Fibre is low at 5.0%, which is the trade-off for that calorie density — this is a concentrate to sit on top of good forage, not a substitute for it. The oat-free base makes it a common choice in sales prep, where the horse needs to bloom without becoming unmanageable to handle.
Performance & Benefits
- 14.1 MJ/kg digestible energy, the highest of the standard RED MILLS mixes.
- 8.0% crude oils and fats, so a meaningful share of the calories comes from oil rather than starch alone.
- 14.0% crude protein to support topline and muscle alongside the weight gain.
- Oat-free formulation, built on steam-cooked barley, maize and wheat flakes.
- Extruded soya, soya bean meal and pea flakes add quality protein and palatability.
- Fortified per kg with 15,000 iu vitamin A, 2,000 iu vitamin D3, 300 iu vitamin E, 60mg copper, 180mg zinc and 0.5mg selenium.
Suitable For
- Horses that struggle to hold condition on a standard ration.
- Horses needing extra topline and covering.
- Sales preparation, where bloom and coat matter.
- Owners specifically wanting an oat-free conditioning feed.
- Not for a laminitic, insulin-resistant or EMS horse — RED MILLS publish no starch figure and the top three ingredients are cooked cereal flakes. Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes, declared at 4.0% starch, is the conditioning feed in this range for a metabolic horse.
Feeding
- Light work: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Moderate work: 0.4–0.8kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Hard work: 0.8–1.2kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 4.0–6.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Intense work: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 6.0–8.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- With crude fibre at only 5.0%, forage does the fibre work — feed at least 1.5% of bodyweight daily as hay or grazing.
- Divide the daily ration into two or more meals and keep water available at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: barley flakes (steam cooked), maize flakes (steam cooked), wheat flakes (steam cooked), cane molasses, soya bean meal, soya hulls, soya oil, extruded soya bean, pea flakes, soya bean flakes (steam cooked), wheat, sunflower seed meal, wheatfeed, barley, mono-dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, sodium chloride, magnesium oxide.
- Typical analysis: crude protein 14.0%, crude fibre 5.0%, crude oils and fats 8.0%, crude ash 6.5%. Digestible energy 14.1 MJ/kg.
- Minerals: calcium 1.00%, phosphorus 0.60%.
- Per kg: vitamin A 15,000 iu, vitamin D3 2,000 iu, vitamin E 300 iu. Iron 120mg, iodine 1.5mg, copper 60mg, manganese 100mg, zinc 180mg, selenium 0.5mg.
- RED MILLS publish no starch or sugar figure for this mix, and no sodium, chloride, potassium or magnesium figure. Earlier copy on this page carried numbers for those four minerals; they do not appear in RED MILLS' declared analysis and have been removed rather than repeated.
Care & Caution
- A high-calorie cereal mix with no published starch figure. Not appropriate for a horse with laminitis, insulin resistance, EMS or PSSM.
- Feeding for weight gain works best slowly. Build the ration up over two to three weeks and weigh-tape fortnightly rather than jumping to the top rate.
- At 5.0% crude fibre this cannot carry a diet on its own — forage must remain the foundation.
