Red Mills Competition 12 Mix – Fast-Release Energy Performance Horse Feed, 20kg
Red Mills Competition 12 Mix – 20kg
Competition 12 Mix is RED MILLS' oat-based performance muesli, built around steam-cooked oat, maize and barley flakes and aimed squarely at fast-release energy. RED MILLS themselves describe it as the mix for the laid-back horse that needs more get-up-and-go, rather than for one already sharp enough.
At 12.0% protein and 12.0 MJ/kg it sits in the middle of the competition range, with 4.5% oil and 8.5% fibre. Temperament, not workload, is the deciding factor here: the same bucket that wakes up a phlegmatic hunter will overcook a sensitive event horse.
Performance & Benefits
- Oat-based muesli giving fast-release, cereal-derived energy for horses in demanding work.
- 12.0% crude protein at 12.0 MJ/kg digestible energy.
- Steam-cooked oat, maize and barley flakes, cooked for digestibility and palatability.
- 4.5% crude oils and fats and 8.5% crude fibre.
- Fortified per kg with 15,000 iu vitamin A, 2,000 iu vitamin D3, 300 iu vitamin E, 60mg copper, 180mg zinc and 0.5mg selenium.
- RED MILLS are members of the BETA NOPS scheme and state that all their equine feeds are tested for naturally occurring prohibited substances by LCMS on a positive-release basis, with the NOPS logo carried on the packaging. They note the scheme is not a guarantee.
Suitable For
- Laid-back horses that need more energy than a cool feed provides.
- Horses in moderate to hard work, and regular competitors.
- Horses that travel frequently and need a palatable, energy-dense bucket feed.
- Not for a sharp or excitable horse, nor for one prone to laminitis, insulin resistance or gastric ulceration — this is an oat-based, fast-release feed. Red Mills Horse Care ULTRA Cubes at 4.0% starch, or Red Mills Horse Care 14 Mix, suit those horses better.
Feeding
- Light work: 0.2–0.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 1.0–3.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Moderate work: 0.4–0.8kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 2.0–4.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Hard work: 0.8–1.2kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 4.0–6.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Intense work: 1.2–1.6kg per 100kg bodyweight daily — 6.0–8.0kg for a 500kg horse.
- Split the daily amount across two or more meals and feed alongside ad-lib or generous forage.
- Clean, fresh water at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: oat flakes (steam cooked), maize flakes (steam cooked), barley flakes (steam cooked), soya (bean) hulls, (sugar) cane molasses, soya (bean) flakes, wheatfeed, barley, sunflower seed meal, soya bean meal, wheat, calcium carbonate, mono-dicalcium phosphate, sodium chloride, soya oil, magnesium oxide.
- Typical analysis: crude protein 12.0%, crude fibre 8.5%, crude oils and fats 4.5%, crude ash 7.5%. Digestible energy 12.0 MJ/kg.
- Minerals: calcium 1.00%, phosphorus 0.55%, sodium 0.32%, chloride 0.79%, potassium 0.90%, magnesium 0.30%.
- Per kg: vitamin A 15,000 iu, vitamin D3 2,000 iu, vitamin E 300 iu. Iron 120mg, iodine 1.5mg, copper 60mg, manganese 100mg, zinc 180mg, selenium 0.5mg.
- RED MILLS publish no starch figure for Competition 12 Mix. Given that the first three ingredients are cooked cereal flakes, assume it is high; we will not put a number on it that RED MILLS have not declared.
Care & Caution
- Unsuitable for horses prone to laminitis, insulin resistance or EMS. No starch figure is published and the feed is cereal-led.
- Fast-release cereal energy can make a sharp horse sharper. Match the feed to temperament, not only to workload.
- Large cereal meals raise the risk of gastric ulceration and hindgut disturbance — keep individual meals small and forage constant.
- Introduce over 7–14 days and reassess condition and behaviour as you go.
