Gut Sponge is Protexin's hindgut product, and the name describes the mechanism they claim for it. Psyllium husk at 20% takes up water and swells; bentonite clay at 566g/kg binds; together Protexin say they regulate digestive transit, coat the gut lining and encourage normal, firm droppings. Peppermint flavouring makes it acceptable to most horses in a damp feed.

It is aimed at the horse whose droppings loosen with any change — new grazing, a lorry journey, a switch of hay — rather than at an acute problem. A 1.5kg tub covers a fortnight at the 100g-a-day starting rate, then about a month at maintenance. It can be fed alongside Gut Balancer where daily probiotic support is also wanted.

Suitable For

• Horses whose droppings loosen with a change of grazing, hay or routine.
• Horses travelling or competing, where transit is disrupted.
• Horses coming back from a digestive upset under veterinary guidance.
• Sandy or free-draining paddocks, where hindgut support is a routine concern.
• Not a treatment for diarrhoea, colic or any diagnosed condition — persistent loose droppings need a vet, not a supplement.

Feeding

• Protexin's rate: 50g, one level measure, mixed with feed twice daily for 7–14 days.
• Then 50g once daily as required, or as advised by a veterinary surgeon.
• At 100g a day a 1.5kg tub lasts about 15 days; at the 50g maintenance rate, about 30 days.
• Dampen the feed before serving so the psyllium takes up water in the gut rather than in the bucket.

Care & Caution

• Do not feed alongside oral macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin or clarithromycin. Protexin warn that smectite clays bind macrolides and stop them working.
• Do not feed with other bentonite-containing products, and do not exceed the stated rate, without veterinary advice.
• Tell your vet the horse is on it before any oral medication is prescribed.
