Henry Bell Dried Mealworms Wild Bird Food 500g
Henry Bell Dried Mealworms – 500g
Five hundred grams of dried mealworm and nothing else in the bag. At 51.3% crude protein and 31.31% oil this is the richest single food Henry Bell make by a wide margin, and it is the one thing that will reliably bring a garden robin down to within a metre of you.
Dried worms keep for months in a sealed tub, which is the whole argument for them over live ones. A 500g bag goes further than the weight suggests, because you offer mealworms by the handful as a top-up rather than filling a feeder with them.
Performance & Benefits
- One ingredient: dried mealworm.
- Crude protein 51.3%, crude fat 31.31%, crude fibre 5.2%, crude ash 3.3% — Henry Bell's own declared figures.
- Protein for winter survival, and for adults feeding nestlings in spring.
- Offer on the ground, from a bird table or in a mealworm feeder.
- Stores dry, unlike live worms, which need refrigerating and using up.
- Henry Bell also bag mealworms in 100g and 1kg.
Suitable For
- Robins above all, and also starlings, blackbirds, nuthatches, blue tits, tree sparrows, song thrushes, wrens and great spotted woodpeckers.
- Spring and early summer, when parent birds are hunting insects for chicks.
- Hand-taming a garden robin.
- Ground and table feeding as much as tube feeders.
- Not an everyday staple on its own — it is a protein top-up. Henry Bell No Mess Mix is the mix to run alongside it.
Feeding
- Offer a small handful at a time on the ground, a bird table or in a mealworm feeder.
- Soak the worms in warm water for ten minutes in spring and summer before putting them out, so nestlings are not fed something completely dry.
- Feed all year, keeping to a routine once you have started.
- Clear away any that have been rained on rather than leaving them to spoil.
- Keep fresh, clean water available for drinking and bathing.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: dried mealworm.
- Crude protein 51.3%. Crude fibre 5.2%. Crude fat 31.31%. Crude ash 3.3%.
- 500g bag. Henry Bell product code H060016.
- These are Henry Bell's declared analytical constituents, taken from their own listing.
Care & Caution
- Soak dried mealworms before offering them during the breeding season. Fed dry to nestlings they can dehydrate a chick.
- Put out only what will be eaten in a day or two. Damp mealworms spoil quickly, and mouldy feed spreads disease through a feeding station.
