A bell-shaped block of seed and cereal bound with dextrin, with the hanger already moulded into the top. Unwrap it, hook it over a branch and it feeds itself out over a week or two. There is no feeder to buy, no lid to unclip and nothing to wash afterwards.

Bound blocks feed differently from loose seed. Birds peck at a solid face rather than pulling at a port, which slows them down and leaves the ground underneath a good deal cleaner than a tube feeder ever manages. It is the easiest possible way to start feeding a garden, and the easiest to keep up.

Feeding

• Unwrap it completely and hang by the moulded hanger from a branch, hook or feeding station.
• Site it near cover but out of a cat's jumping range.
• Replace it once it has been pecked down to the hanger.
• Take it in if it turns soft or mouldy after a spell of heavy rain.
