Henry Bell Insect Oil Log – 6 Pack
Henry Bell Insect Oil Log – 6 Pack
Six cylindrical suet logs sized to drop straight into Henry Bell's drilled wooden log feeder. The shape does more than it sounds: a bird has to work suet out of a hole rather than tear at an exposed face, which slows feeding right down, keeps the starlings from clearing it in a morning and makes a pack last.
Like the rest of the Insect Oil line, these are built on oil from black soldier fly larvae instead of beef tallow. That is much the same fat profile a bird gets from hunting insects, and it is the reason to pay more for them than for a plain suet log.
Performance & Benefits
- Six logs per pack, shaped for the Henry Bell wooden log feeder.
- Insect oil from black soldier fly larvae replaces the beef tallow used in conventional suet.
- Henry Bell describe the larvae as carrying more Vitamin B12 than salmon, twice as much protein as beef and chicken, and ten times more calcium than beef.
- Lauric acid, which Henry Bell link to feather growth, weight gain and metabolism.
- Suet sits inside the wood, so rain reaches less of it than an exposed cake.
- Slower feeding than a fat ball, which stretches a pack further.
Suitable For
- Clinging birds: blue tits, great tits, coal tits, nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers.
- Gardens already running the Henry Bell Insect Oil Log Feeder.
- Year-round feeding, and the breeding season in particular.
- Anyone who finds starlings empty a fat ball feeder before lunch.
- Not usable in a fat ball cage or a seed tube. Henry Bell Insect Oil Balls 8 Pack is the cage version of the same food.
Feeding
- Push one log into each drilled hole until it sits flush with the wood.
- Replace logs as they empty. Do not press fresh suet onto old residue.
- Brush the holes out between refills and let the wood dry.
- Feed all year and keep to a routine once you have begun.
- Keep fresh water nearby for drinking and bathing.
Composition & Analysis
- Made with Henry Bell's Insect Oil, from black soldier fly larvae, instead of beef tallow.
- Supplied as a pack of six logs.
- Henry Bell publish no ingredient list and no analytical constituents for the Insect Oil logs. No protein, oil, fibre or ash figure is given here because there is no manufacturer figure to give.
- The claims above about B12, protein and calcium are Henry Bell's own, and describe the larvae rather than the finished log.
Care & Caution
- Suet softens in hot weather and can smear onto plumage, spoiling waterproofing. Move the feeder into shade in summer or take it down during a heatwave.
- Pick up fallen pieces where dogs can reach them. A high-fat lump off the lawn can bring on pancreatitis.
