Burlybed Original Miscanthus Bedding 20kg
Burlybed Original Miscanthus Bedding – 20kg
Burlybed Original is 100% miscanthus, and the way it is processed is what separates it from a plain chopped cane. Burlybed shred and break up the hard outer casing to expose the soft, pithy inner core: the core does the absorbing, the outer shell keeps the bed from collapsing into dust underfoot. The raw material is double dust extracted before it is baled.
It is built for a deep litter system. Burlybed reckon on 5 to 8 bales to set up a deep bed in a 12ft by 12ft stable, and then top-ups of as little as half a bale a week. Wet and odour go down into the bed and the top stays dry, so most days the job is lifting the droppings off the surface, and the chop size is cut to fall through a fork rather than ride on it.
Performance & Benefits
- 100% miscanthus, a fast-growing cane crop grown and processed on the farm.
- The hard outer casing is shredded open to expose the absorbent pithy core, which is where the absorbency comes from.
- Double dust extracted before baling, for a low-dust bed.
- Moisture and odour are drawn down into the bed, leaving the surface dry to lie on.
- Chop size designed to fall through a fork, so you lift droppings and not bedding.
- Rots down faster than shavings or straw and can be spread straight on the land.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies on a deep litter system, which is how Burlybed recommend using it.
- Stabled horses with dust sensitivity or a history of respiratory trouble.
- Yards with limited muck heap space or a need to spread rather than cart away.
- Owners wanting a shorter daily muck-out than a straw bed demands.
- Less suited to a yard that strips a bed to the floor every day — the deep litter approach is what makes it economical.
How to Use
- Lay a deep bed of 5 to 8 bales in a standard 12ft by 12ft stable to start.
- Lift droppings off the surface daily; the wet works its way down into the bed.
- Top up as needed, which Burlybed say can be as little as half a bale a week.
- Bank the sides up against the walls as you would with any deep bed.
- Strip the bed out fully at the interval that suits your yard, and spread the used bedding on the land.
Specification
- 100% miscanthus horse bedding, double dust extracted.
- Supplied in 20kg bales.
- Burlybed's own guide: 5 to 8 bales for a deep bed in a 12ft by 12ft stable, then around half a bale a week to top up.
- Burlybed publish no absorbency figure in litres per kilogram and no moisture content, so none is stated here.
- This product is listed on a handle reading Original Extra; Burlybed's own product name for it is Burlybed Original.
Care & Caution
- A deep litter bed needs managing. Lift the droppings every day and keep the stable well ventilated, or ammonia builds up under the surface and irritates a horse's airways — the opposite of what a low-dust bedding is bought for.
- Some horses eat their bedding. Miscanthus cane is not a feed, and a horse taking in a quantity of it risks impaction colic, so watch a known bed-eater and use a muzzle or a different bedding if it persists.
- Stack bales flat and dry. A wet bale is heavy, mouldy and no use to anybody.
