SPILLERS Ulca Balancer 15kg – BETA EGUS Approved Balancer for Gastric Health
Spillers Ulca Balancer – 15kg
This is the balancer for the good doer that also has a stomach problem — the horse holding its weight easily on forage and therefore needing no extra calories, but needing vitamins, minerals, amino acids and some help at the gastric end. It carries the BETA EGUS approval mark, the independent accreditation for feeds suitable for horses prone to equine gastric ulcer syndrome.
Two ingredients do the gastric work. Maerl at 3% is a marine-derived calcium source that helps buffer stomach acid, and apple pectin at 0.35% supports the stomach lining, with lecithin and dried oligo-fructose at 2% alongside. The rest is a conventional high-specification balancer: 25% protein, 30 mg/kg biotin, 9% starch and 5% sugar.
Performance & Benefits
- Carries the BETA EGUS approval mark for horses prone to gastric ulcers.
- Maerl at 3% — marine-derived calcium that helps maintain a healthy stomach pH.
- Apple pectin at 0.35% with lecithin, supporting the stomach lining.
- Dried oligo-fructose at 2% with yeast products at 0.5% — prebiotic and probiotic support.
- 25% protein at 10.5 MJ/kg, balancing a forage-only diet without adding calories.
- Biotin at 30 mg/kg, so a 500g serving supplies 15 mg — the level shown to support hoof horn.
- Vitamin E at 2,500 iu/kg with 2 mg/kg selenium.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies prone to gastric ulcers.
- Good doers that maintain weight on forage alone.
- Horses needing balanced nutrition without extra calories.
- Horses being maintained after a course of veterinary ulcer treatment.
- Not the right balancer for a laminitic — Spillers claim no laminitis approval for it, and Baileys No.14 Lo-Cal Balancer at 6% starch is the one we stock for that horse.
Feeding
- 500kg horse: 500g a day. 250kg pony: 250g a day.
- At 500g a day the 15kg bag lasts a 500kg horse 30 days; at 250g a day it lasts a pony 60 days.
- Feed alongside ad-lib forage — long gaps with an empty stomach are a key ulcer risk.
- Introduce gradually, as with any new feed.
- Clean, fresh water at all times.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: soya (bean) meal (genetically modified), wheatfeed, sunflower seed meal dehulled, rice bran, maerl (3%), molasses blend (sugar cane molasses, desugared beet molasses), oligo-fructose (dried, 2%), rapeseed oil, dicalcium phosphate, sodium chloride (salt), yeast products (0.5%), calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, apple pectin (0.35%).
- Typical analysis: digestible energy 10.5 MJ/kg, protein 25%, oil 6%, fibre 8%, starch 9%, sugar 5%.
- Vitamins and minerals: A 40,000 iu/kg, D3 4,000 iu/kg, E 2,500 iu/kg, biotin 30 mg/kg, selenium 2 mg/kg, copper 200 mg/kg, zinc 600 mg/kg, manganese 200 mg/kg, calcium 3%, phosphorus 1.2%, magnesium 0.6%.
- 15kg bag. The pack carries the BETA EGUS approval mark and the BETA NOPS mark.
- Active-ingredient tables listing maerl at 22g per 100g, plus fenugreek, liquorice root and threonine, appear on some retail listings. Spillers' published composition contains none of those; the figures above are Spillers' own.
Care & Caution
- Gastric ulcers need veterinary diagnosis and treatment. This balancer supports management alongside veterinary care; it does not treat ulcers.
- Spillers make no laminitis claim for Ulca Balancer. At 9% starch and 5% sugar it should not be assumed safe for a horse with laminitis, EMS or insulin dysregulation without veterinary advice.
