SPILLERS Original Balancer – 20kg

Original Balancer is the step up from Daily Balancer: 25% protein against 15%, with probiotic live yeast and prebiotic MOS added for hindgut function. It is aimed at the horse that holds weight easily on forage but is doing more than pottering — a good doer in real work, which is a combination that catches a lot of owners out.

The protein figure is the point of it. On a forage-only diet lysine is the amino acid most likely to run short, and a horse short of lysine will strip muscle to meet its requirement. That shows up as a poor topline on a horse that otherwise looks well covered, and no amount of extra hay fixes it. Fed at 500g a day for a 500kg horse, a 20kg bag lasts around six weeks.

Feeding

• Feed 100g per 100kg of bodyweight daily: 250g for a 250kg pony, 500g for a 500kg horse.
• A Spillers balancer cup holds approximately 250g.
• Feed in a small amount of chopped fibre so the horse has something to chew on.
• Introduce over about a week, and keep forage and clean water available at all times.
