Red Bag is the richest of Simple System's grass pellets — the spring grazing equivalent, made from high protein fescue grass and cut to catch grass at its most nutritious. Where Blue Bag gives you summer grazing and HayCare gives you mature, high-fibre hay, Red Bag gives you the flush, in a form you can weigh out into a bucket.

The declared analysis makes the case: crude protein 18–22% against starch of under 2%, with digestible energy over 10 MJ/kg. That is a lot of forage-based fuel and quality protein for a horse in hard work, a broodmare or youngstock building frame — and it arrives without the temperament that cereal-based hard feed often brings with it. Sugar is declared at 5–15%.

Suitable For

• Horses in hard work — racehorses, eventers and competition horses.

Feeding

• Introduce gradually over a week, as with any new feed.
• Ideally fed soaked, using 2.5 times their volume of water.
• For foals and for greedy, elderly or dentally challenged horses, the pellets must be soaked.
• Start at 100g per 100kg bodyweight daily, dry weight — 500g a day for a 500kg horse.
• Increase as required, up to a maximum of 5kg a day.
• A level Stubbs bowl scoop holds approximately 1.5kg dry weight.

Care & Caution

• Simple System state that any pelleted feed carries a risk of choke, and strongly recommend soaking pelleted feeds until free from lumps.
• Sugar at up to 15% puts this outside the range most laminitic and EMS horses should be fed. Take veterinary advice first.
