Muscle Maintenance is GWF's amino acid supplement for performance and older horses. GWF now list the product as Muscle & Topline — their Muscle Maintenance page serves the Muscle & Topline listing — and the specification set out below is the current one they publish for it.

It is a concentrate rather than a feed. Crude protein is 41.3%, with lysine added at 150g per kilo, methionine at 32g and leucine at 14g, plus vitamin E at 25,000mg per kilo. Fed at 25–50g twice a day, so a 3kg pouch runs about a month for a horse.

Performance & Benefits

• 41.3% crude protein from maize gluten meal, Hipro soya, whey protein concentrate and linseed.
• Added lysine 150g/kg, methionine 32g/kg, leucine 14g/kg, threonine 10g/kg, isoleucine 5g/kg and tryptophan 2.5g/kg.
• Vitamin E at 25,000mg/kg with vitamins C, D3, B6, B12, folic acid, biotin and beta-carotene.
• Hyaluronic acid at 0.1% and rosemary extract at 0.5%.
• Omega 3 fatty acids at 1.8%, with 2.5% Oatinol in the oil.
• 14.7 DE, delivered in a measured dose rather than a bucket of feed.

Suitable For

• Performance horses in hard or extreme work.
• Senior horses losing muscle and topline with age.
• Horses recovering from injury or a long lay-off.
• Horses with EMS, Cushing's or PSSM — GWF name all three.
• It is an amino acid concentrate, not a vitamin and mineral supply — pair it with GWF Equilibra Feed Balancer or GWF OneCup, but never both together.

Feeding

• Young and adult horses: 2 heaped measures (50g) twice daily. Ponies: 1 measure (25g) twice daily.
• Senior and recovering horses: 50g three times daily for horses, 25g three times daily for ponies.
• Hard or extreme work: an extra 50g after work on competition days.
• Mix into the normal feed. A 3kg pouch is about 30 days for a horse on the standard rate.
• Fresh water at all times.

• Composition: maize gluten meal (non-GM), Hipro soya produced from genetically modified soya, linseed expeller, micronised beet pulp meal, 5% whey protein concentrate, black oats, oat fibre, vegetable oil including 2.5% Oatinol, sucrose, magnesium oxide, 0.5% rosemary extract, 0.1% hyaluronic acid, 0.05% black pepper, calcium sulphate, sodium chloride, oligosaccharides.
• Analytical constituents: crude protein 41.3%, crude fat 6.4%, crude fibre 4.5%, crude ash 10.4%, starch 6.7%, sugar 7.4%, omega 3 fatty acids 1.8%. Energy 14.7 DE, on GWF's May 2024 figure.
• Additives per kg: lysine 150g, methionine 32g, leucine 14g, threonine 10g, isoleucine 5g, tryptophan 2.5g, manganese 104mg, selenium 2mg, vitamin E 25,000mg, vitamin D3 6,250 IU, vitamin C 770mg, vitamin B6 400mg, folic acid 26mg, beta-carotene 20mg, vitamin B12 3mg, biotin 2mg, with L-arginine, L-glutamic acid, yucca extract, turmeric, L-proline and glycine.
