Working Dog is Canagan's highest-energy dry recipe at 403 kcal per 100g and 19% fat, with 56.1% chicken and turkey behind it — freshly prepared free-range chicken at 20.4%, dried chicken at 19%, freshly prepared turkey at 10.2%, turkey fat at 5% and chicken gravy at 1.5%. It also carries the biggest joint inclusion in the range.

Glucosamine and MSM come in at 1,850 mg/kg each with chondroitin sulphate at 1,350 mg/kg, which is materially more than the Light/Senior recipe carries. Sold VAT free to UK independents as a working dog food, it is formulated for all life stages and comes in 2kg and 12kg bags.

Feeding

• Low activity, under an hour of exercise a day: 75–125g for a 5–10kg dog, 170–210g at 15–20kg, 245–285g at 25–30kg, 320–350g at 35–40kg, 385–420g at 45–50kg and 450–475g at 55–60kg.
• Medium activity, over an hour a day: 80–140g, 190–235g, 275–315g, 355–390g, 430–465g and 500–530g across the same weight bands.
• High activity, over two and a half hours a day: 95–170g for a 5–10kg dog, 230–280g at 15–20kg, 330–380g at 25–30kg and 425–470g at 35–40kg. Canagan's published table repeats a figure above that band, so we have not quoted it — ask us and we will check it with them.
• Introduce over a week, moving a quarter at a time, and adjust by 10% either way on condition.
• Feed a hard-working dog after work rather than before it, and keep fresh water available.

Care & Caution

• At 19% fat and 403 kcal per 100g this is a ration for a dog that genuinely works. Fed to a pet dog on ordinary walks it puts weight on quickly, and weight on a working breed does its joints no favours.
• Working dog food is sold VAT free because of how it is classified for tax, not because of anything it contains. The classification carries conditions about the dogs it is fed to; it is not a nutritional claim.
