Canagan's puppy recipe runs at 38% crude protein and 393 kcal per 100g, the highest protein figure in their dry dog range, with 55% chicken behind it — 29% freshly prepared free-range chicken and 26% dried. Puppies build muscle and skeleton at the same time, and a growth food is judged on whether it can supply that without loading the gut.

This is the 12kg sack, which is a bag for a big puppy rather than a small one. A dog expected to finish at 25–45kg eats between 375g and 430g a day through the middle of its growth, so 12kg lasts about a month — the right amount of time for kibble to stay fresh once opened.

Feeding

• Canagan feed by expected adult weight. A puppy heading for 1–5kg: 65g a day at 2–3 months, 85g at 4–5, 90g at 6–7, 85g at 8–9, 65g at 10–11, then adult food.
• Heading for 5–10kg: 145g, 165g, 180g, 165g, then 145g at 10–11 months before moving to adult.
• Heading for 10–25kg: 215g, 235g, 255g, 255g, 235g and 215g at 12–13 months, adult from 14–15 months.
• Heading for 25–45kg: 375g, 395g, 415g, 430g at 8–9 months, then 415g, 395g and 375g at 14–15 months.
• Split the daily amount across three meals until about four months, then two. Change food over across a week and keep fresh water down.

• Analytical constituents: crude protein 38%, crude fat 17%, crude fibre 3%, crude ash 7%, omega 6 2.9%, omega 3 0.46%, calcium 1.4%, phosphorus 1%. Metabolisable energy 393 kcal per 100g.
• Nutritional additives per kg: vitamin A 15,000 IU, vitamin D3 1,200 IU, vitamin E 150 mg, taurine 1,500 mg. Trace elements: zinc oxide 90 mg, zinc chelate hydrate 45 mg, copper (II) sulphate pentahydrate 10 mg, calcium iodate anhydrous 2 mg, sodium selenite 0.2 mg.
• Canagan describe added DHA for brain development but publish no DHA figure, so none is quoted here. Omega 3 is declared at 0.46%.

Care & Caution

• This is a complete puppy food. Do not add calcium or mineral supplements to it — over-supplementing a growing skeleton causes more trouble than the shortfall it is meant to fix.
• Canagan's chart stops at an expected adult weight of 45kg. For a giant breed above that, growth rate matters more than appetite, and the ration should be set with your vet rather than by scaling the table up.
