Ancol Stormguard Softshell Dog Coat – Bordeaux, XL (60cm back)

XL takes a 60cm back length, measured from the base of the collar to the base of the tail, which puts it on labradors, retrievers, larger lurchers and similar. As the unlined member of the Stormguard range it is built for warm rain: a waterproof shell with no fleece behind it, so a big dog working hard does not overheat inside its own coat.

The chest protector matters more the bigger the dog, since a long-legged animal throws mud the whole length of its underside. Elasticated leg straps hold the back end down at a canter, reflective edging tape runs the seams, and a harness slot lets a lead reach a harness worn underneath.

How to Use

• Measure the back length from the base of the collar to the base of the tail with the dog standing square, and order to the measurement rather than to breed.
• Fasten the neck first, then the belly, then bring the elasticated straps around the hind legs.
• Leave two fingers of slack at the neck and keep the leg straps clear of the groin.
• Pass the lead through the harness slot to a harness underneath, not to the coat.
• Machine wash at 30°C and air dry naturally.

• Ancol publish no chest girth figures for the softshell, no fabric composition and no waterproof rating, and do not state whether the harness slot on this model is zipped, so none of that is given here.

Care & Caution

• Machine wash at 30°C and air dry. Do not tumble dry or dry near a radiator or stove — heat degrades the waterproof coating.
• The harness slot is for lead access to a harness worn beneath. Never clip a lead to the coat; nothing on a coat is load-rated.
• Unlined, so it turns rain but adds no real warmth. Layer a fleece under it in cold rain, or use the fleece-lined Stormguard.
• Check the elasticated leg straps behind the elbows and in the groin for rubbing, which shows up faster on a big striding dog.
• Take the coat off indoors rather than letting it dry on the dog.
