As we approach summer it is key to discuss the importance of summer grooming for rabbits.
Moulting happens at the start of the season and mostly when the weather warms up to get rid of their winter undercoat. Summer grooming will help your rabbit with the process of moulting and to help them not overheat. A great tip is to start grooming your rabbit in the winter months to help create a deeper bond and by the time the big spring moult comes around you are both ready!
Grooming your rabbit also helps prevent them from over-grooming, which can lead to fur being swallowed and building up in their gut. Unlike cats, rabbits can’t vomit, so this can cause dangerous blockages over time. Without regular brushing, their fur can become heavy, matted, and lead to overheating. It's recommended that you groom your rabbit every day to keep on top of their fur. This will help you create a deeper bond and you can keep on top of their health and skin’s condition.
Not all rabbits like grooming so we recommend trying to use treats for positive reinforcement and build trust over time. Target the areas that are harder for them to reach and you can even use your hands when you're petting them to gently pull on tufts that are ready to come out. This is called hand stripping and can be a more comfortable way to do it as it doesn’t involve a brush. When their coat is “blown” this means you will see tufts of fluff poking out, it is important they get removed otherwise if the rabbit ingests this into their stomach it can cause blockages which can result in GI status or bloat which can be fatal.
Before you tackle grooming your rabbit remember they have very delicate skin, soft brushes are great for everyday use but for matting you will need to use something else. Make sure to purchase the appropriate safe grooming tools so you are prepared for the summer shred.
If you are taking the time to groom your rabbits you may as well also grab your rabbit-safe nail trimmers and cut down on their nails.
