As we head into the wetter and colder months, it’s worth checking whether your horse is fully kitted out for the season ahead. If you got a new horse in spring or summer, you might not have gathered all the rugs you’ll need yet.

Now is the perfect time to get your rugs washed, repaired, and reproofed while we still have sunny days for drying, and while your horse may not need to wear one yet.

Every horse is different, some feel the cold more, others grow thick winter coats, and where they are kept can make a big difference too. Some yards are naturally warmer, and horses with access to well-built field shelters or barns may need lighter rugs than those in more exposed paddocks.

Rugs You’ll Want in Your Collection

For Travel and Cooling

  • Fleece Rug or Cooler – Ideal for travelling in autumn/winter. You’ll still want ventilation in the lorry or trailer, but you also don’t want your horse getting chilled. A fleece is also perfect for cooling your horse down after exercise on cold days, wicking away moisture while keeping them warm.

Stable Rugs

  • Lightweight Stable Rug – For milder autumn nights.

  • Medium and Heavyweight Stable Rugs – To keep your horse comfortable on colder nights in the stable.

  • Stable Rugs With & Without Necks – Horses who feel the cold may benefit from a neck cover, while others prefer more freedom without one.

Turnout Rugs

Be prepared for all weather conditions.

  • Lightweight Turnout (0–100g) – Perfect for mild, wet autumn days to keep them dry without overheating.

  • Mediumweight Turnout (150–220g) – For cooler, damp days in late autumn and early winter.

  • Heavyweight Turnout (300–450g) – Essential for the coldest, wettest days.

Extra tips:

  • Rugs with detachable necks are highly versatile, allowing you to adapt to changing weather.

  • Having a spare of each weight is a good idea so you can rotate when one needs washing or drying.

  • Waterproofing is key, ensure your turnouts are well-reproofed before the season begins.

Optional but Useful Extras

  • Fly Rug with Waterproof Top – Great for mild but wet autumn days when flies are still around.

Rain Sheet – A no-fill option for those in mild climates who just need to stay dry.
