Stay seen, stay safe, stay protected: Ways for riders to stay reflective this winter.

With road safety week upon us at Animall, we’re committed to doing our part to make the roads safer for everyone and reduce the number of accidents each year by highlighting the importance of visibility on the roads.

Whether you’re bringing your horse in from the field or fitting in a quick hack before nightfall, it’s essential to make yourself visible - not just for your safety, but for the safety of other road users as well. Wearing reflective gear on bridle paths or roads, allows drivers to spot you from a safe distance and respond appropriately. This proactive visibility prevents situations where drivers only see you at the last moment, reducing potential danger for both horse and rider. While wearing hi-vis gear yourself ensures you’re visible, adding reflective accessories to your horse enhances visibility even more. There are plenty of ways to make your horse stand out, such as using reflective leg wraps and tail guards, along with exercise sheets to increase visibility from behind. Reflective fly veils and hi-vis neck bands also help your horse be seen by oncoming traffic. By making your horse visible with reflective gear in dark weather enhances safety and makes the ride more enjoyable. As the evenings grow darker more quickly, riders should consider that an evening hack might no longer be safe, and they may need to wait until the nights start getting lighter again. 

Dog walkers should also be encouraged to wear reflective gear when walking in low-visibility times and areas. This could include a hi-vis vest to help other walkers and drivers spot them when walking near roads, or a reflective collar or harness on their dog, making it easier for them and others to locate the dog.
