Bringing a new pup home is like inviting a tiny whirlwind into your life – full of snuggles, excitement, and a fair bit of chaos! That first night can feel like a mix between "Aww, my new best mate!" and "Crikey, what have I done?" But fear not, pet parent, we're here to help you nail that first night and keep your sanity (mostly) intact.
What to Expect on That First Night
Let’s face it, your pup’s going to be a bit bewildered. Up until now, they’ve been hanging with the fam – mum, siblings, or the humans at a rescue centre. Now, here they are, in a new world with new smells and noises, and they're probably thinking, "Where the heck am I?"
Here are some of the classic ‘first night’ antics:
- Inquisitiveness/Wandering: Your pup’s on a mission to sniff everything – after all, this is uncharted territory. Don’t be surprised if they’re poking their nose into every nook and cranny.
- Crying and Whimpering: Without their litter mates or familiar faces, your pup may be feeling a bit lonely and let out a few heart-wrenching yelps. Hang in there – it’s their way of saying, “Hey, I’m a bit lost here!”
- Loss of Appetite: All the newness can be overwhelming, so don’t panic if your pup doesn’t wolf down their food just yet. They’ll come around when things start to feel a bit less alien.
- Toilet Accidents: Yup, accidents will happen. Your pup’s still figuring out the lay of the land and might not know where it’s okay to ‘go’.
- Disturbed Sleep: Sleep? Ha! Expect your pup to wake up a few times in the night, ready for either an adventure or a cuddle or simply confused about where they are.
How to Prepare for Your Pup’s Grand Arrival
Now, you can't eliminate all the chaos (where's the fun in that?), but you can at least prepare for it. With a few steps, you'll make sure your puppy’s first night is a little less "madness" and a little more "cuddly mayhem."
Before Bringing Your Puppy Home…
- Puppy-Proof the House: Think of your puppy as a furry Houdini on a mission to get into everything. Block off any areas where they shouldn’t go with baby gates, hide all those enticing electrical cords, and keep your most precious items well out of reach. Remember – anything within reach of a zoomie-prone pooch is fair game. And trust me, zoomies are coming.
- Agree on Ground Rules with Co-Parents: Whether you’ve got a partner, housemate or a full-on puppy co-parenting committee, you’ve all got to be on the same page. Who’s on night-duty? What’s the treat allowance? Where’s bedtime happening? Making these decisions in advance will prevent arguments at 3 a.m. while your pup barks at the moon.
- Create a Comfy Sleeping Area: Set up a designated spot where your pup will sleep. A crate or bed tucked in a cool, quiet spot, with some cosy blankets and a couple of toys, is ideal. Your puppy needs to feel safe, so make it as inviting as possible – but don’t be surprised if they still want to check out what you’re up to instead.
The Golden Rule? Patience! It’s all new for them, and for you. So, take a deep breath, and remember: those sleepless nights will eventually be replaced by snoring together on the sofa, watching telly, and sharing the best cuddle sessions. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll let you have the sofa to yourself once in a while… but don’t count on it!
