When decorating for Christmas, cat owners should ensure all decorations are cat-friendly, as many can pose hazards - especially for curious cats who can’t resist investigating everything!

Cats adore real christmas trees for their natural appeal - perfect for scratching on the bark, enjoying the enticing outdoor scent, and hiding underneath. However, switching to a fake tree might be a safer option for your feline friends. Real trees shed needles that, if ingested, can pose a health risk, and the oils they produce can be toxic to cats. Additionally, it’s important to keep cats away from the tree water, as it can be harmful if consumed. To make your christmas tree as cat-friendly as possible, consider raising it off the ground to minimise distractions at your cat’s eye level. Ensure the tree has a sturdy base, as an excited cat might jump around, and you’ll want to avoid the risk of the tree toppling over and causing a mess.

Avoid using tinsel on your tree, as it can be a choking hazard for cats or cause blockages if swallowed. Instead, opt for a safer alternative like ribbons or fabric garlands. Use shatterproof decorations on your tree and avoid placing ornaments near the bottom, where curious paws can easily reach them. Secure ornaments tightly with twist ties or zip ties to prevent accidents, especially if shatterproof options aren't available. Keep fairy lights out of your cat’s reach to prevent them from chewing on the wires and use hidden wiring around the tree for added safety.

Decorations throughout the house should be placed thoughtfully, considering where your cat likes to roam. Avoid leaving lit candles within their reach; instead opt for battery-operated candles for a safer alternative. Harmful plants, such as mistletoe and holly, should be avoided around the house as they are toxic to cats. If ingested, these plants can cause serious health problems like vomiting, diarrhoea, and other complications, making them unsuitable for a cat-friendly holiday environment. Place fragile decorations, candles, or edible items like gingerbread houses on high shelves or mantels to keep them safely out of reach.

Designate a cat-safe zone where they can unwind away from the holiday chaos. Include cosy bedding and their favourite toys to make it a relaxing treat to keep them entertained and less tempted to explore the decorations.
