Westland John Innes Peat Free Ericaceous Compost 28L – Loam-Based Compost for Acid-Loving Plants
Ericaceous compost exists because a large group of popular garden plants — rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, pieris, blueberries and heathers — simply will not take up iron properly in an alkaline compost. Put one in ordinary compost and the leaves go yellow between the veins and the plant sulks.
This is the John Innes version, which means it is loam-based rather than a light multipurpose mix. Loam gives the compost weight and body: pots are more stable, the compost holds nutrients longer and it does not shrink away from the sides when it dries. It is also peat free, so you get the traditional John Innes structure without the peat.

How to Use
- Choose a pot with free drainage and part-fill with compost
- Position the plant at the same depth it was growing previously
- Fill around the rootball, firm gently and water in thoroughly
- Water with rainwater where possible — hard tap water raises the pH over time
- Top up with liquid ericaceous feed through the growing season

- Not suitable for lime-loving plants or general seed sowing
- Do not add garden lime or alkaline feeds to ericaceous compost
- Wear gloves and wash hands after handling compost
- Avoid breathing dust — damp the compost if it is very dry
