Well-rotted farmyard manure is the oldest soil improver there is, and the reason gardeners keep going back to it is that it does two jobs at once: it feeds the soil and it changes its structure. Worked into a heavy clay it opens the ground up; dug into a light sandy soil it helps hold moisture and nutrients that would otherwise wash straight through.

Westland's bagged version takes the guesswork and the smell out of sourcing it from a farm. It is ready to use straight from the bag, which makes it practical for a suburban garden, an allotment plot or a raised bed where a trailer load would be unmanageable.

How to Use

• Clear weeds from the area before applying
• Fork a generous layer into the top of the soil when preparing a bed
• Or spread as a surface mulch and let worms take it down
• Keep the material clear of stems and trunks when mulching
• Water in after application in dry conditions
