Trident Sugar Beet Pellets Horse Feed – 25kg
Trident Sugar Beet Pellets – 25kg
Trident's molassed beet pellet, sold by them as Supabeet: the fibrous residue left after sugar is extracted from beet, dried, mixed with molasses, pelleted, and given a fine palm oil coating. It is a high digestible fibre feed and it is very palatable, which is why it is used to get supplements and wormers eaten.
One thing matters here more than anything else, and that is soaking. Trident specify a minimum of 24 hours, at one litre of water to every 200g of pellets. Pellets are dense and hard and take far longer than flaked beet — this is not a fifteen-minute feed, and treating it as one is dangerous.
Performance & Benefits
- High digestible fibre energy, released slowly rather than as a starch rush.
- Very palatable, so it carries supplements and wormers into a fussy feeder.
- Starch of just 0.7%, so the energy is not coming from cereal.
- Metabolisable energy 12.5 MJ/kg of dry matter.
- Pelleted rather than shredded, so it stores tidily and measures accurately dry.
- FEMAS assured, and listed as 4.1.11 in the EU Catalogue of Feed Materials.
Suitable For
- Horses and ponies needing condition and stamina from fibre.
- Shy and fussy feeders.
- Getting powders, supplements and wormers eaten.
- Cattle, sheep and other stock — Trident publish daily rates for those too.
- Not the feed for a laminitic, EMS or PPID horse: the molasses put sugar at 21%. British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet, at 5% total sugar and 3% starch, is the one for those horses.
Feeding
- Soak for a minimum of 24 hours before feeding. That is Trident's own figure.
- Use one litre of water to every 200g of pellets — a 5:1 ratio.
- Trident's equine rates run from 1.0kg to 4.0kg a day, depending on bodyweight and workload.
- Use soaked feed within a couple of days. In summer make up only one day at a time, because it ferments.
- Store the dry pellets in a secure bin or hopper, cool, dry and free from vermin.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: dried sugar beet fibrous residue with cane molasses, pelleted and coated with a fine palm oil.
- Typical analysis, dry matter basis: dry matter 88.0%, crude protein 10.2%, oil 1.8%, NDF 31.8%, starch 0.7%, sugar 21.0%.
- Metabolisable energy 12.5 MJ/kg of dry matter. 25kg sack.
- Trident publish NDF but no crude fibre figure, so none is stated here.
- Some listings describe this as 100% British sugar beet with nothing added. Trident's own description includes cane molasses and a palm oil coating and states no country of origin, so that claim is not repeated here.
Care & Caution
- Never feed these pellets dry, and never feed them under-soaked. Dry beet pellets swell after they are swallowed and cause choke and impaction colic.
- Trident's own instruction is explicit: any horse that has been fed unsoaked sugar beet should be seen by a vet immediately.
- Twenty-four hours is a minimum, not a target. Run two buckets so there is always one soaking.
- Soaked beet ferments in warm weather. Throw away anything sour or fizzing.
- At 21% sugar this is not a feed for a horse at risk of laminitis.
