The large red rubber curry comb is the one to reach for in a moult. Rubber teeth grip dead hair in a way bristles cannot, and a few minutes of circular work will fill a hand with coat that would otherwise end up on your clothes and down the stable wall.

Being rubber, it is safe used against skin: the teeth are blunt and the whole comb flexes, so it follows the shape of a shoulder or a quarter instead of scraping across it. Red is easy to pick out of a grooming box full of dark tools, which makes it a sensible choice where each horse has its own kit.

How to Use

• Fit your hand over the moulded bar so the teeth sit flat on the coat.
• Work in circles against the lie of the hair, on the muscled areas of the body.
• Avoid the face and the legs below knee and hock, where there is little covering.
• Tap the comb clear of hair against a hard surface, standing away from the horse.
• Sweep the raised hair and scurf away with a dandy or body brush.
