A martingale stop is a small rubber ring that sits where the neck strap crosses the body strap of a running or standing martingale. Without one the neck strap wanders up towards the withers and down towards the chest as the horse moves, and the martingale ends up hanging crooked. Hy's version is plain moulded rubber in brown, to sit invisibly against brown tack.

It is a two-minute job to fit and it is the sort of thing that only gets noticed when it perishes and disappears. Hy also list it in black, so a brown-tack yard and a black-tack yard can each buy the right one rather than living with a mismatched stop on the front of the martingale.

How to Use

• Undo the neck strap and thread it through the rubber stop before doing it back up.
• Slide the stop down so it sits snugly over the point where the neck strap and body strap cross.
• Warm the rubber in your hands first if it is stiff — it stretches more easily than it looks.
• Wipe it over with the rest of the tack; do not dress it with oil, which softens rubber over time.

Care & Caution

• Rubber perishes. Check the stop for splits and hardening when you clean the tack, and replace it once it has gone brittle.
• Fitting a martingale stop does not remove the need for rein stops on a running martingale — without them the rings can run down and catch on the bit or rein fastenings.
