Black sunflower is the seed with the thin shell. Compared with striped sunflower, its husk is soft enough for small birds to crack, so tits, finches and dunnocks can get at the kernel as well as the larger species. Henry Bell sell it straight — a 2.8kg bag of black sunflower seed and nothing else.
At 52.7% crude fat and 17.0% crude protein it is one of the most energy-dense foods on a feeding station, and it suits almost any way of feeding: from a hanging feeder, a bird table or the ground. The trade-off against sunflower hearts is the husks, which drop below the feeder; in exchange the seed costs less per kilo.

Feeding
- Fill a seed or sunflower feeder, or put out on a table or the ground.
- Put feed out regularly and keep a routine once birds depend on it.
- Sweep up or rake husks from under the feeder every week or so.
- Clean feeders and tables with a bird hygiene spray and remove old or damp seed.
- Keep fresh water available nearby.
