Cider vinegar in the drinker is one of the oldest habits in poultry keeping, and the point of an unpasteurised one is the Mother — the cloudy, gel-like culture that forms on the surface and is filtered out of the clear supermarket kind. Equimins keep it in, along with the natural malic acid and the enzymes and minerals that come with it.
It is a tonic. It supports a bird's general condition and it is used to help maintain inner balance, in Equimins' phrase — it does not treat or cure anything, and a sick bird needs a diagnosis rather than a vinegar.

Feeding
- Add to the drinking water at a rate of 10ml per litre of water.
- Shake the bottle before pouring, as the Mother settles.
- Use plastic or stainless steel drinkers; vinegar and galvanised metal do not mix.
- Change treated water daily and rinse the drinker, as you would with plain water.
- Equimins publish no maximum period of use for poultry.
