Barrier - Natural Fly Repellent Spray, 500ml

Barrier Natural Fly Repellent Spray – 500ml

Barrier Biotech build their repellents in Norfolk around eucalyptus rather than citronella, and this is the 500ml trigger bottle — the size most people start with, and enough to do one horse properly for several weeks rather than a whole season. It goes on as a thin liquid, covers quickly and does not leave the coat tacky.

Everything Barrier make in this line shares one standing position, which they publish across the range: DEET-free, no citronella, no vinegar, not tested on animals, and nothing knowingly included that may contravene current FEI and HRA rules. What differs between their formulas is the active ingredient and its strength, and that is the one thing we have not been able to pull from their site for this bottle.

Performance & Benefits

• 500ml trigger spray — the practical size for one or two horses.
• DEET-free, and Barrier state their repellents contain no citronella and no vinegar.
• Aimed at the biting and nuisance insects of a British summer: midges, bots, horseflies, blackflies, face flies, house and stable flies.
• Trigger head spreads it evenly over the body instead of soaking one patch.
• Barrier state that their products are not tested on animals.
• Barrier state that no materials have knowingly been included that may contravene current FEI and HRA rules.

Suitable For

• Horses and ponies through the midge and fly season.
• Owners who want a plant-based repellent rather than a synthetic one.
• Horses that react badly to citronella-based sprays.
• One or two horses. A yard getting through more should look at the Barrier Super Plus Fly Repellent 1 Litre, which works out considerably cheaper per application.
• Not the format for the head, ears, belly or sheath — a spray runs straight off those. The Barrier Super Plus Fly Gel 500ml stays where it is put.

How to Use

• Shake well before every application; it is Barrier's first instruction across the whole range.
• Spray liberally over the body, keeping clear of the eyes and nasal passages.
• Spray onto a cloth and wipe the face rather than spraying towards it.
• Reapply as and when required — Barrier set no fixed timetable.
• Patch test first on any horse, pony or donkey with thin or sensitive skin.

Specification

• 500ml trigger spray bottle. Barcode 5038103111137.
• Barrier's own product page for this formula returned a server error on every attempt, so its active ingredient and percentage are not quoted here — read them from the panel on the bottle.
• For reference only: Barrier publish the active ingredient of their separate Super Plus range as Eucalyptus citriodora oil, hydrated and cyclised, at 1.5% w/w. That figure belongs to Super Plus and should not be assumed for this bottle.
• Barrier publish no duration of protection for any of their repellents, so no hours of cover are claimed here.
• Nothing on this page has been taken from a competing retailer's listing.

Care & Caution

• Keep it out of the eyes and nasal passages. Wipe the face with a cloth instead of spraying towards it.
• Barrier recommend a patch test before use on thin or sensitive skin.
• External use on the animal only — not for broken skin, open wounds or rubbed patches.
• Keep the bottle away from children and wash your hands after handling it.
