The rugby-ball version of Ancol's coffee grounds tugger — an oval of natural rubber blended with recycled coffee grounds, on a rope. The oval is the reason to choose it over the round one: dropped or thrown, it kicks off sideways instead of rolling true, so a dog has to read the bounce rather than simply run in a straight line.

The compound is firm yet flexible, letting teeth sink in without easily puncturing or tearing it, and the textured surface gives a mouth something to grip. Ancol give it as 11 x 5cm and aim the coffee grounds toys at smaller dogs and puppies, so it is a small-dog toy despite sitting in the Tough range.

How to Use

• Hold the rope, let your dog take the ball, and keep tugs low and level.
• Bounce it on grass for the sideways kick; on hard ground it is harder for a dog to judge safely.
• Wash with warm soapy water as required and allow to dry fully before reuse.
• Retire it once the rope frays badly or the rubber splits.

Care & Caution

• Not indestructible. Dogs should always be supervised during play.
• Check the toy regularly for signs of wear and remove it immediately if it is damaged or if parts become detached.
• Rope is not for unsupervised chewing. Swallowed strands can gather in the gut and cause serious problems, so put this away between sessions.
• Trim off and discard long loose strands rather than letting a dog pull them free.
