Ancol Obedia Basket Muzzle – Size 5

Size 5 sits in the middle of Ancol's nine-size Obedia range, and their chart gives it as chin 11.3cm, nose 6cm, muzzle 23cm and end 20cm. That comes out about right for a springer, a working cocker or a border collie — a dog with a proper snout but nothing like a large-breed head. Two dogs of the same breed can still land a size apart, so hold a tape against all four figures before you decide.

Getting that number wrong spoils the muzzle in either direction. Too tight and the dog cannot open its mouth wide enough to cool itself; too loose and it will be pawed off inside a hundred yards. There is no reliable route from breed name or bodyweight to a size here, which is why the measuring is worth ten minutes of your evening.

• Introduce it gradually and positively — Ancol's own instruction is to build up wearing time slowly. Start with the dog putting its nose in for a treat and nothing more.
• Fit it so the basket clears the end of the nose and the dog can open its mouth fully to pant.
• Check the dog can reach water through the basket before you rely on it on a walk.
• Clean regularly with warm water and mild soap, and let it air dry fully before use.

Care & Caution

• Never leave a muzzled dog unattended, indoors or out, and never leave one muzzled and crated or tethered.
