Free-run chicken at 39% and wild boar at 26% make up the 65% meat in this 400g can. Wild boar is the point of it: a genuinely novel protein for most dogs, which gives you somewhere to go when chicken, beef and lamb have all been tried and none of them settled.

It is the leanest can in the Canagan 400g line-up, with crude fat declared at 5.8% against 6.7–8.5% for the others. For a dog carrying weight, or one that has had trouble with rich food, that difference is the reason to pick this tin over the beef or the lamb.

Feeding

• Canagan's adult guide, in 400g cans a day: toy 1–5kg a quarter to half a can; small 5–12kg half to one and a half; medium 12–25kg one and a half to two and three quarters; large 25–45kg two and three quarters to three and three quarters; giant 45–70kg three and three quarters to five and three quarters.
• Introduce over a week: 25% Canagan on day one, half and half on day three, 75% on day five, all Canagan by day seven.
• Canagan advise adjusting by 10% either way if your dog is carrying too much or too little condition.
• Serve at room temperature and keep fresh water alongside.
• Cover and refrigerate what is left and use it within two days.
