Equine America Apple Lytes – 2.5kg

Apple Lytes replaces what a horse actually loses in sweat, in roughly the proportions it loses it: 12,200mg of chloride, 6,800mg of sodium and 2,000mg of potassium in a 30g serving, with calcium and magnesium behind them. The apple and cherry flavouring is there to encourage drinking as much as to get the powder eaten.

Only 2,200mg of the 30g serving is dextrose, so this is a low-sugar electrolyte rather than a glucose drink with salts added. Equine America sell it as Apple Lytes Granules; the 2.5kg tub stocked here carries their code 235B-UK and runs to roughly eighty days at a light-work rate.

Feeding

• Horses 400–600kg: 30g per day in light work, 60g per day after strenuous exercise. Maximum 60g per day.
• Ponies 300–450kg: 15g per day in light work, 30g per day after strenuous exercise. Maximum 30g per day.
• Do not exceed these intakes except on veterinary advice.
• A 2.5kg tub is around an 80-day supply at the light-work rate.

Care & Caution

• Never feed electrolytes to a horse that does not have free access to clean water — salts without water make dehydration worse, not better.
• Do not give electrolytes to a horse that is already visibly dehydrated without speaking to your vet first.
• Stay within the stated maximum of 60g a day for a horse and 30g for a pony unless your vet has said otherwise.
