Performance Lite answers an awkward combination: a horse in medium to hard work that is also a good doer. TopSpec declare it at 9.5 MJ/kg with 15% protein, so it deliberately does not carry the calories or the protein of the 12.5 MJ/kg, 25% protein Comprehensive balancer. TopSpec are specific that it is for horses already in good condition and getting ample protein from their forage.

The micronutrient specification is where the work is done. Vitamin E is declared at 2,500iu/kg — the highest tier, matching Comprehensive and AntiLam and well above the 1,000iu/kg of the standard Lite balancer — with biotin at 30mg/kg, calcium 2.4% and magnesium 0.6%. It is also the only balancer here with no soya in the declared composition, taking its oil from linseed expeller instead.

Feeding

• Feed 100g per 100kg bodyweight daily — 500g for a 500kg horse, split as 250g in each of two feeds.
• A half-pint mug holds roughly 200g. A 15kg sack lasts a 500kg horse 30 days, or a 250kg pony 60 days.
• Mix into a damp chop rather than a large bucket feed, which would undo the point of a lite balancer.
• Provide access to a salt lick at all times.
• Ensure clean, fresh water is always available.
