TopSpec Performance Cubes – 20kg Cereal-Free Low Starch Performance Feed
TopSpec Performance Cubes – 20kg
Performance Cubes are a cereal-grain-free blend for horses in hard work, declared at 12.5 MJ/kg with 13% protein, 14% fibre and 6% oil. Like the rest of the TopSpec blends they carry no added vitamins or trace elements, because they are designed to be fed with a TopSpec balancer or the All-in-One supplement rather than on their own.
One figure deserves stating plainly rather than glossing: TopSpec declare starch at 13.0%. Cereal-grain-free is not the same thing as low starch, and at 13% these are not a low-starch feed. They will not fizz a horse the way a straight oat or barley mix does, but a horse whose diet is being controlled for starch needs that number checked against the daily quantity fed.
Performance & Benefits
- Cereal-grain-free, using wheatfeed, high fibre oat by-product and grass rather than whole cereal grains.
- 12.5 MJ/kg of digestible energy — the same energy density as the Comprehensive balancer, in a feed you can give by the kilo.
- 6% oil, part of it from linseed expeller and micronised linseed meal.
- 14% fibre, higher than a conventional competition cube.
- Supplemented with calcium at 1.0%, magnesium at 0.4% and salt, which plain straights are not.
- Starch declared at 13.0%: moderate rather than low, and lower than the 38-40% of the TopSpec flaked feeds.
Suitable For
- Horses in medium to hard work needing energy in a manageable volume.
- Competition and event horses that react badly to oat- and barley-based mixes.
- Horses whose condition needs holding through a season of work.
- Horses already on a TopSpec balancer, which supplies the vitamins and trace elements these cubes do not.
- Not a low-starch feed despite being cereal-grain-free — for a horse managed on a controlled-starch diet, TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes at 7.0% starch or FibrePlus Cubes at 9.0% are the lower-starch options we stock.
Feeding
- TopSpec publish no daily quantity for Performance Cubes, so none is stated here. Feed to workload and condition alongside forage.
- Always feed with a TopSpec balancer or the All-in-One supplement — these cubes contain no added vitamins or trace elements.
- Split anything over about 2kg across two or more feeds a day.
- Introduce gradually over seven to ten days.
- Ensure clean, fresh water is always available.
Composition & Analysis
- Composition: wheatfeed, high fibre oat by-product, soya bean meal (GM), grass, molasses, linseed expeller, calcium carbonate, soya oil (GM), micronised linseed meal, sodium chloride, magnesium oxide, dicalcium phosphate.
- Typical analysis: protein 13.0%, oil 6.0%, fibre 14.0%, starch 13.0%.
- Digestible energy 12.5 MJ/kg. Calcium 1.0%, magnesium 0.4%.
- No added vitamins or trace elements — TopSpec declare none for this blend.
- TopSpec publish no sugar percentage, so none is stated here.
- 20kg bag.
Care & Caution
- At 13.0% declared starch this is not a suitable feed for a horse or pony prone to laminitis, diagnosed with EMS or insulin dysregulation, or managed on a low-starch diet for a muscle disorder such as PSSM.
- TopSpec's own product page describes Performance Cubes as a feed for performance horses requiring energy for hard work. It does not present them as a feed for muscle-related disorders, and neither do we.
- If your horse has a diagnosed muscle disorder, the diet needs planning with your vet against a stated starch limit.
