Sundown Green Wheat Straw Bedding 19kg
Sundown Green Chopped Wheat Straw Bedding – 19kg
Sundown Green is the economy end of Sundown's chopped straw range: British wheat straw, cut short so it forks and banks easily, then put twice through their vacuum de-dusting rig before it is baled. Chopping is the practical difference from a conventional long straw bale — the bed lifts cleanly, the muck heap is smaller, and there is no wrestling a slab of straw apart at seven in the morning.
A food-grade eucalyptus fragrance goes on during baling, which is what you notice first when the wrapper comes off. It is a warm, soft bed rather than an especially absorbent one; for a wet or messy horse the rapeseed or miscanthus bales in the same range hold more. Sundown carry BETA NOPS approval across the equine bedding range, so it is safe to use under competition rules.
Performance & Benefits
- Chopped rather than long straw, so it beds down evenly and mucks out quickly.
- Double vacuum de-dusted, giving a very low dust level for horses and handlers with sensitive airways.
- Food-grade eucalyptus fragrance added at baling.
- Soft and warm underfoot, which encourages a horse to lie down.
- British wheat straw from local farms — an annual by-product of the grain harvest rather than a felled tree.
- Composts down quickly once on the heap.
- The cheapest bale in the Sundown equine range.
Suitable For
- Stabled horses and ponies on a straw bed, kept on banks or flat.
- Yards wanting the low dust of a processed bedding at a straw price.
- Competition yards, as the range is BETA NOPS approved.
- Owners moving off long straw who want an easier muck out.
- Wrong choice for a horse that eats its bed, or a wet, messy one — Sundown Yellow rapeseed or Sundown Purple miscanthus hold far more moisture and are less inviting to eat.
How to Use
- Sundown give 4–5 bales to lay a new bed in a 12ft x 12ft stable.
- Top up with 1–2 bales a week, depending on the horse and how deep you like the bed.
- Skip out daily and turn the bed to keep the base dry.
- Store bales under cover. The LDPE wrap is weatherproof but Sundown do not recommend long-term outdoor storage.
- The wrapper is LDPE with 30% recycled content and goes in soft plastic recycling.
Specification
- 19kg bale of chopped British wheat straw with food-grade eucalyptus fragrance.
- Double vacuum de-dusted using Sundown's own process.
- BETA NOPS approved bedding.
- Coverage: 4–5 bales for a 12ft x 12ft stable, then 1–2 bales weekly.
- Sundown publish no dust percentage or absorbency figure for this bedding, so none is stated here.
Care & Caution
- Wheat straw is edible. A horse that eats its bedding can take in a lot of low-value fibre, which matters for good doers, laminitics and anything on a weighed ration.
- Straw beds are a colic consideration in horses that gorge on them. If yours does, move to a non-palatable bedding rather than trying to manage the habit.
