SPILLERS Senior Complete Care Mix – 20kg

Senior Complete Care Mix is the do-everything feed of Spillers' veteran range: a balanced coarse mix at 11.0 MJ/kg with glucosamine and MSM through it for joints, live yeast and prebiotic FOS for the hindgut, and vitamin C at 300 mg/kg alongside 400 iu/kg vitamin E for immune function. Dried carrot and dried herbs are in the recipe for palatability, which is a bigger consideration in an old horse than in any other.

It is a complete feed rather than a topping — fed at 3kg a day to a 500kg horse in light work alongside forage, it covers the vitamins and minerals with no balancer needed. Starch is 18%, so it is a maintenance feed for a veteran with sound metabolic health rather than a low-starch one.

Suitable For

• Not for a veteran that can no longer chew, or one prone to laminitis — Spillers Senior Super-Mash soaks to a mash at 8% starch and 2.5% sugar and suits both.

Feeding

• Introduce gradually over seven to ten days.
• 500kg horse in light work: 3kg daily, split across a minimum of two meals, plus forage.
• 600kg horse in light work: 3.5kg daily, split across a minimum of two meals, plus forage.
• Watch for quidding — dropped, half-chewed balls of feed mean it is time to move to a soaked mash.
• Ad-lib forage and clean water at all times.

• Composition: flaked barley, wheatfeed, oatfeed, grass high temperature dried, sunflower seed meal dehulled, cane molasses and soya oil blend, rice bran, flaked maize, flaked peas, soya meal, soya hulls, molasses blend, rapeseed oil, calcium carbonate, salt, dried carrot, oligo-fructose, glucosamine hydrochloride, dried herbs, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), with added vitamins, minerals, probiotic live yeast and prebiotic FOS.
• Typical analysis: digestible energy 11.0 MJ/kg, protein 13.0%, oil 5.0%, fibre 14.0%, starch 18.0%, sugar 5.5%.
• Vitamin A 10,000 iu/kg, vitamin D3 1,500 iu/kg, vitamin E 400 iu/kg, vitamin C 300 mg/kg.
• Selenium 0.30 mg/kg, copper 30 mg/kg, zinc 100 mg/kg.
• 20kg bag. BETA NOPS approved. Spillers publish no glucosamine or MSM inclusion level for this feed, so none is stated here.

Care & Caution

• At 18% starch this is not suitable for a horse or pony prone to laminitis, and older horses with PPID are a group at raised risk. Spillers Senior Super-Mash is the lower-starch senior feed in this range.
• Split the daily amount across at least two meals rather than feeding 3kg in one bucket.
