Alfalfa-Pro Fibre is a short-chopped alfalfa blend built round one property of the plant: alfalfa is unusually rich in bioavailable calcium, and calcium is alkaline, so a horse chewing it produces a feed that works against stomach acidity rather than adding to it. Spillers declare 1.5% calcium and carry the BETA EGUS approval mark on the bag, which is awarded to feeds judged suitable for horses prone to gastric ulcers.

The calories come from oil rather than cereal — 10% oil against 3.5% starch — so it puts condition on a competition horse without the fizz. Spillers publish 12.5 MJ/kg digestible energy, which is substantial, so this is a feed for a horse that needs the calories, not one that holds weight on air. It is a complementary feed: pair it with a compound feed or a balancer.

Feeding

• Introduce gradually over seven to ten days, as with any change of feed.
• Spillers' worked example for a 500kg horse in medium work is 250–500g of Alfalfa-Pro Fibre per meal alongside the rest of the ration.
• For a 500kg racehorse in heavy training Spillers give 250g per meal, fed with cubes and forage.
• A Stubbs scoop holds roughly 0.6kg of it.
• Feed with ad-lib forage and clean water at all times.
