Softwood shavings for small animal bedding, compressed into a 3.5kg bale so a useful quantity fits into a bag one person can carry. Shavings remain the default bedding for hutches and cages for good reason: they are absorbent, they let a rabbit or a guinea pig dig and arrange, and they can be spot-cleaned daily rather than stripped out every time.

The shavings are dust extracted, which is the part that matters for a small animal living with its nose a few centimetres from its bedding. The bale expands considerably once the compression is released, so a bag goes further than it looks, and the shavings are biodegradable and can go on a compost heap once soiled.

How to Use

• Cut the bale open and shake the shavings out; they expand as they loosen.
• Spread 3 to 5cm over a clean, dry hutch or cage floor.
• Remove wet patches and droppings daily and top up the shavings.
• Strip and replace the whole bed weekly, or more often in a small cage.
• Keep unopened bales dry and off a concrete floor, which will draw damp into the bag.
